Welcome to Sub Rosa Firearms Training

Sub Rosa Firearms Training offers a range of classes for new and more experienced pistol owners. Our beginner and intermediate classes can help you gain the basic skills, knowledge and attitude required for becoming a safe and responsible gun owner, while preparing you for enrollment in a concealed handgun carry class. Advanced classes for more experienced pistol owners introduce students to the fundamentals of incorporating a pistol into their self-defense planning and strategies. We underscore the importance of safety, situational awareness, mindfulness and judicious restraint in every class we teach, noting that your personal actions as a firearms owner reflect upon the entire community of responsible, law-abiding gun owners.

Please Note:

The only NRA-approved course listed here is Basics of Pistol Shooting

Basics of Pistol Shooting

This is an eight hour in-person classroom and live-fire training experience. This NRA-approved course, presented by Sub Rosa Firearms Training, teaches students the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary for safely owning and using a pistol. Tuition entitles students to their own copy of NRA’s "Basics of Pistol Shooting” text, and other standard NRA materials. To earn NRA's Certificate of Completion, class participants must satisfactorily pass a marksmanship test and score 90 percent or better on an open-book written exam.

Women’s Introduction to Defensive Pistol

This class was developed by a woman specifically for women shooters and will be led by Sub Rosa’s most-gifted woman instructor. This class teaches skill sets similar to those taught in Intermediate Pistol. It builds on the fundamentals learned in Basics of Pistol Shooting and introduces working from an outside-the-waistband holster as well as introductory movement and shooting from positions of cover. The class works heavily to develop marksmanship skills and to ingrain sound fundamentals to build confidence and competence for women shooters of all ages.

Intermediate Pistol

This class builds on the fundamentals learned in Basics of Pistol Shooting and teaches the basics of working from an outside-the-waistband holster as well as introductory movement and shooting from positions of cover. This class was developed to teach the bare minimum Sub Rosa-recommended skills necessary for enrolling in a concealed handgun carry class. Please be aware that our recommendation is purely subjective and based on the experience of our own instructors. Many concealed carry classes do not openly state minimum skills required for enrollment.

Defensive Pistol I, II and III

This trio of classes can be taught separately or as a block over multiple days, usually six. Individual classes can be broken into one- or two-day modules to meet the needs and abilities of students, but we recommend the two-day option. These classes require a higher level of stamina and commitment than our introductory classes, and cover a huge array of skills, including advanced marksmanship principles, non-standard shooting positions, effective use of cover, shooting on the move, threat identification under stress, and introduction to competitive shooting. This is a fun and rewarding “tactical university” that can be catered specifically to women, traditional or domestic partners, and other cohorts.

Absolutely excellent. My lead instructor ran an outstanding course, and the others were invaluable during the one-on-one instruction at the range. I learned a lot and came away with a clear plan for what I needed to work on immediately to improve. I’m definitely planning to come back for additional training.
